HHC, HHCO and HHCP banned in France
From tomorrow, Tuesday 13 June 2023, HHC and its two derivatives, HHCP (hexahydrocannabiphorol) and HHCO (HHC acetate), will be banned from sale and consumption. The French National Agency for Medicines and Health Products Safety (ANSM) had been working on HHC for some time, whilst the cannabinoid was taking the internet by storm. Today, its decision has been announced: HHC and its two derivatives, HHCP and HHCO, will be classified as narcotics from Tuesday.
Key takeaways:
- From 13 June 2023, the ANSM will ban the sale and consumption of HHC, HHCP and HHCO in France.
- These cannabinoids are classified as controlled substances due to their side effects and risk of addiction.
- All products containing HHC and its derivatives, including flowers, oils and vapes, will be affected by this ban.
- Several European countries have already banned HHC, and France joins this list from tomorrow.

The ANSM classifies HHC, HHCP and HHCO as narcotics
The ANSM has just classified HHC and its derivatives as narcotics. The decision will come into effect on Tuesday 13 June. As a reminder, a narcotic is an illicit drug, which means that the purchase, sale and consumption of such substances may lead to legal proceedings.
The French National Agency for Medicines and Health Products Safety (ANSM) justifies this decision on the basis of the side effects that HHC, HHCP and HHCO may cause. The ANSM, the main decision-making body, is a public agency that supports the government in health-related decisions.
Which HHC, HHCP and HHCO products will be banned?
All products containing HHC and its derivatives are covered by the ban. This includes flowers, oils, resins and vapes.
In which countries is HHC banned?
Currently, several European countries have banned HHC. These include:
- Austria
- Belgium
- Denmark
- The United Kingdom
Tomorrow, France will add to this list.
Is the decision final?
The ANSM has already published its official statement on its website. You can now view the report on the decision.
Furthermore, the Minister for Health, François Braun, has already confirmed on Twitter that “ From tomorrow, the consumption and sale of HHC will be banned. ”
Some experts reject this decision and wish to appeal against it. This is notably the case for Yann Bisiou, a specialist in drug law. It remains unlikely that this will prevent the ban on HHC and its derivatives.
Can you still buy HHC, HHCP and HHCO?
The ban comes into force tomorrow, Tuesday 13 June 2023.
You can still legally purchase all your HHC products (or derivatives) until midnight tonight.
Why have HHC, HHCP and HHCO been banned?
The ANSM has highlighted side effects ranging from tremors and dizziness to tachycardia. In short, it appears that HHC and its derivatives cause too many side effects. Furthermore, the ANSM highlights a risk of addiction.
