H4CBD: What is it?
CBG9, THCP, THCJD, H4CBD, HHCP and HHCPO are now banned in France. Discover CBD as an alternative!
In the world of legal cannabis, things are constantly changing… It’s hard to keep up with the latest trends when new compounds are being discovered every day. H4CBD, or hydrogenated cannabidiol, is ‘the’ new cannabinoid to watch right now. Tetrahydrocannabidiol (H4CBD, also known as THD) is a molecule derived from cannabidiol (CBD). We refer to H4CBD when the CBD molecule is extended by two additional dihydrogen molecules. This increases the cannabinoid’s natural potency tenfold. This new molecule, closely related to CBD, looks promising on the market as it is a boosted version of CBD and delivers very convincing effects.
Key takeaways:
- H4CBD, or hydrogenated cannabidiol, is a new legal cannabis molecule offering more potent effects than CBD.
- It results from the addition of two dihydrogen molecules to the CBD molecule, increasing its potency and bioavailability.
- H4CBD interacts more effectively with the endocannabinoid system, particularly with the CB1 receptor, amplifying its effects.
- Although legal in France, it is recommended to check the legislation of other countries before international consumption.

What is H4CBD?
H4CBD was discovered, along with many other cannabinoids, in the mid-20th century, whilst the scientific community was attempting to identify and optimise the various cannabinoids found in the hemp plant.
H4CBD is a cannabinoid closely related to CBD, as it is hydrogenated cannabidiol. As a reminder, CBD is a cannabinoid that occurs naturally in hemp plants.
If cannabidiol has potential, we suspect that hydrogenated cannabidiol has even more! It is, in fact, a cannabinoid with increased stability and bioavailability.

Hydrogenated Cannabidiol
We talk about hydrogenation, but what exactly is a hydrogenated cannabinoid? A hydrogenated cannabinoid is a molecule capable of binding to our endocannabinoid system in a much more effective way, thanks to hydrogen atoms.
Hydrogen atoms generally help to increase a molecule’s stability.
Hydrogenated cannabidiol (H4CBD) therefore has enormous potential.
Why choose tetrahydrocannabidiol? (H4CBD)
As we mentioned, hydrogen atoms increase the chemical stability of the cannabinoid. This allows:
- Increased bioavailability, i.e. its absorption by the body.
- Enhanced interaction with the endocannabinoid system, particularly with the CB1 receptor.
- Enhanced effects.
H4CBD significantly increases the potential of the base cannabinoid, CBD.
H4CBD: where does it come from?
H4CBD, just like CBD, originates from Sativa L. hemp. During flowering, hemp naturally produces numerous cannabinoids, the best known of which is cannabidiol, which can interact with our endocannabinoid system.
The Sativa L. variety is legal in Europe and France as it naturally contains a low level of THC.
The benefits of H4CBD
H4CBD is derived from CBD, so the two molecules can easily be compared. It is said to have the same potential as cannabidiol, but with greater potency! H4CBD interacts more strongly with our cannabinoid receptors, which amplifies the usual effects of CBD tenfold.
Anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects
Hydrogenated cannabidiol is said to be an excellent anti-inflammatory and pain reliever. This ‘boosted’ cannabinoid provides the same effects as cannabidiol, ‘but better’. Potentially, tetrahydrocannabidiol could therefore reduce the sensation of pain and limit the body’s inflammatory responses.
Soothing and anti-stress effects
It is already accepted that cannabidiol is an excellent natural stress reliever. The scientific community confirms that its interaction with our cannabinoid receptors is responsible for providing prolonged relief from anxiety and intrusive thoughts. Tetrahydrocannabidiol is said to have similar effects. According to reviews, however, it is much more effective than cannabidiol.
Effects on sleep
As H4CBD relaxes the body and mind, it prepares you for sleep. Consuming hydrogenated cannabidiol can be a good way to relax the muscles, clear the mind of intrusive thoughts and reduce chronic pain before going to bed.
This promotes rapid, restorative sleep.

Brain stimulation and mood stabilisation
One of the distinctive features of tetrahydrocannabidiol lies in its ability to stimulate brain activity. Much more so than cannabidiol in its natural state, H4CBD is said to encourage a mental state conducive to creativity and conceptualisation.
Opinions vary: some find that H4CBD boosts their self-confidence and creativity, whilst others experience feelings of gentle nostalgia. It would appear that the cerebral effects manifest themselves depending on the activity undertaken and each individual’s personal chemistry. Generally speaking, it can be said that H4CBD:
- Encourages creativity.
- Leads to ‘mind mapping’-style thinking
- Promotes self-reflection, open-mindedness and creative thinking.
- Induces a mild euphoria, particularly through a sensation of lightness.
Why does THD, or H4CBD, have such notable effects on the body?
Like other ‘cannabinoids’, hydrogenated cannabidiol interacts with the endocannabinoid system in our body. The endocannabinoid system consists of a network of receptors, enzymes and endocannabinoids that interact within our body to regulate it. Certain external cannabinoids (such as phytocannabinoids found in hemp) are capable of altering the nature of interactions within the endocannabinoid system, and thus have an indirect effect on our physiological functions.
H4CBD, just like CBD, alters the nature of interactions within the endocannabinoid system, which explains the effects it produces.
Unlike cannabidiol, however, it is capable of interacting much more potently with the CB1 receptor, which gives it stronger effects.
It should be noted that cannabidiol has only a low affinity for the CB1 receptor. Its action is, therefore, much milder than that of H4CBD.
What are the differences between H4CBD and CBD?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is characterised by its mildness. This natural cannabinoid is intended for people who wish to experience very mild effects on the body and mind.
Hydrogenated cannabidiol (H4CBD) produces stronger sensations, mainly due to a much greater affinity with the CB1 receptor. It is a solution for people who wish to experience more intense sensations. It has been claimed that H4CBD is ‘100 times’ more intense than CBD. Whilst this claim is somewhat exaggerated, it is true that hydrogenated cannabidiol has a more noticeable effect than cannabidiol.
Are there any side effects?
H4CBD, or THD, can cause more significant side effects than CBD, which itself has virtually no side effects. These adverse effects include:
- Drowsiness
- Nausea or dizziness
- Lack of concentration
- Poor motor coordination
- Dry mouth
- Drug interactions
That is why caution and common sense are generally recommended! Don’t overdo the good things – that way, you’ll enjoy them more… It’s best to test your personal reaction to the product first before taking too large a quantity. Everyone’s body chemistry is different!
Are there any specific recommendations?
Naturally, all cannabinoids must be kept out of reach of children. We also recommend that you do not consume H4CBD if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. H4CBD is metabolised by the liver and may therefore cause a drug interaction: do not consume if in doubt and always seek the advice of a healthcare professional.
Finally, we advise caution. Please do not drive or perform any dangerous tasks after consuming H4CBD.
Is H4CBD legal?
H4CBD is a completely legal cannabinoid in France. However, you should remain vigilant if you intend to consume H4CBD abroad. Check the applicable legislation in each country.
In France, it is entirely legal to consume tetrahydrocannabidiol. Of course, THD should not be confused with THC. Whilst THD is permitted, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is prohibited if its concentration exceeds 0.2%.

Where can I buy H4CBD?
Few shops currently stock H4CBD. Generally speaking, you’ll find it easier to buy it online. Before choosing your hydrogenated cannabidiol, it’s best to check that the product complies with UK legislation (less than 0.2% THC) and that it is of good quality.
