Moon Rock & Ice Rock CBD: What’s the difference?
In the world of cannabidiol, a wide range of derivative products has emerged. Hemp flowers, optimised in their CBD form – and therefore legal – open up a world of possibilities. Oils, cosmetics, flowers and resins are the subject of numerous developments and new trends. Among the products derived directly from the hemp flower are CBD ice rocks and moon rocks, which are favoured by consumers seeking powerful effects. Both ice rocks and moon rocks were devised to enhance the potential of natural CBD flowers.
The manufacturing method is similar for both: a natural CBD flower is selected for its density and strength, then coated in wax or cannabidiol isolate to enhance its properties. But what are the differences between ice rocks and moon rocks?
Key takeaways:
- Moon Rock and Ice Rock CBD are products derived from hemp flowers, designed to deliver powerful effects.
- Moon Rock is coated in CBD wax and dusted with pollen, whilst Ice Rock is coated in CBD isolate.
- Ice Rock can reach a CBD concentration of up to 80%, offering an intense experience.
- Moon Rock combines several cannabinoids for a synergy of effects and more pronounced flavours.

CBD Ice Rock and Moon Rock: a recent invention
CBD Moon Rock and Ice Rock were invented relatively recently. This reflects a general trend in the hemp industry to optimise its effects as much as possible. Generally, CBD flowers are consumed to alleviate everyday ailments (sleep disorders, anxiety, pain, etc.) Consequently, research into cannabidiol is focused on improving CBD strains and their derivatives to enhance the cannabinoid’s potential for well-being.
Moon Rock and Ice Rock CBD were created with this aim in mind. These products fall somewhere between the authentic flower and a derivative product, as they consist of a flower coated in cannabidiol oil or isolate.
Origin of CBD Moon Rock
Moon Rock is said to have been invented by the American rapper Kurupt, famous for his involvement with the Death Row Records label. He is said to have come up with the idea of dipping a cannabis strain, Girl Scout Cookies, in cannabis oil and then sprinkling it with pollen. A winning combination: not only does the flower gain in texture and flavour, but it also produces much stronger effects. Its moon rock appearance gave it its name.
Since this invention, there have been many fans of Moon Rocks. Today, Moon Rock has been adapted into a legal version, containing less than 0.2% THC.
The Moon Rock production technique significantly increases the CBD content. CBD Moon Rock is not psychoactive but provides a greater sense of relaxation than traditional flower.

The origins of CBD Ice Rock
Following on from Moon Rock came Ice Rock, or ‘ice block’ in English. Ice Rock is thought to be even more recent than Moon Rock, having been invented in California in 2014. The principle behind Ice Rock is essentially the same, with the difference that the flower is coated in isolate. This further increases its CBD content.
Ice rocks and moon rocks: differences in production
Moon rock: a flower coated in wax
As we mentioned, CBD moon rock and ice rock are similar, but their production methods differ significantly. The production of moon rock involves:
- Selecting a fleshy, dense CBD flower, which undergoes the same drying process as a traditional hemp flower.
- Coating the flower with cannabidiol wax, which is a crystallised oil with an extremely high concentration of cannabinoids.
- Dispersing pollen all around the coated flower to enhance its potency. As a reminder, pollen is rich in ‘trichomes’, those plant hairs laden with cannabinoids.
CBD Ice Rock: a flower coated in isolate
Ice Rock is produced in the same way. However, instead of coating the flower in CBD wax, it is coated in isolate. CBD isolate is obtained through a targeted extraction of cannabidiol. This produces a white powder consisting of pure cannabidiol crystals. Generally, the isolate is 99% pure! This means that Ice Rock is even more ‘packed’ with CBD than Moon Rock.
However, every product has its own advantages!
Which to choose between CBD Ice Rock and CBD Moon Rock?
CBD Ice Rock: authentic potency
If you want to retain the pleasure of the cannabidiol flower whilst enjoying intense effects, you might like Ice Rock. Indeed, the CBD concentration can reach 80%, which is a very high cannabinoid content for a flower (generally, there is around 6% CBD in a CBD flower).
What’s more, with ice rock, you can mix things up, as the isolate isn’t only available in a CBD version. You can find ice rocks containing CBG, or even CBN!
Moon rock: a synergy of cannabinoids
The advantage of moon rock is that it combines the benefits of numerous cannabinoids. Unlike Ice Rock, which is mainly composed of isolate (and therefore a single targeted cannabinoid), Moon Rock is coated in full-spectrum oil (i.e. containing all the cannabinoids naturally present in the hemp plant, such as CBG, CBN or CBC).
So, although Moon Rock has a lower cannabinoid content than Ice Rock, it will have similar effects thanks to the synergy of the cannabinoids. What’s more, its flavours will be more pronounced!
In short, both Ice Rock and Moon Rock have their own unique benefits.
How should you consume Ice Rock and Moon Rock CBD?
CBD Ice Rock and Moon Rock have a very hard shell, unlike traditional hemp flowers. To consume them, you will therefore need a metal grinder, whose sturdy teeth will be able to crack the shell. A plastic grinder, on the other hand, is likely to be too fragile.
Otherwise, these products are consumed just like traditional CBD flowers. Simply crumble them and add them to a CBD joint, a herbal tea, or a culinary dish…
And you, do you prefer Moon Rock or Ice Rock?
