Smartshop: what is it?
In recent years, the European retail landscape has been changing, with an increasing number of shops dedicated to wellbeing, ‘rare’ plants and stimulants that have beneficial effects on the body, mind, imagination and creativity. This trade targets a niche audience that gathers around very specific, increasingly trendy shops known as ‘smartshops’.
Attracting both the curious and connoisseurs, smartshops are misunderstood shops that nevertheless play a growing role in the modern urban economy. What is a smartshop? What can we find in these shops?
What is a smartshop?
The concept of the smartshop has its roots in the Netherlands, a country where liberal and pragmatic approaches to trade regularly give rise to conceptual developments. Essentially, smartshops are designed as retail outlets where you can find products, plants and dietary supplements that stimulate the brain or relax the body.
For example, smartshops are among the only shops to sell nootropics, i.e. natural substances capable of boosting cognitive functions and mental stamina. Just as coffee wakes us up and aids concentration, many other nootropic ingredients help to stimulate our brains.
Unlike Dutch coffee shops, which sell cannabis, smartshops do not offer substances classified as hard drugs. However, they may offer products such as magic mushrooms (before they were banned) or legal alternatives to other substances, which have no psychoactive effects but still stimulate the body and mind, or conversely induce relaxation.
It is essential to emphasise that smartshops operate within the legal framework of the country in which they are established. They often advocate responsible use and educate their customers on the effects and uses of their products. Depending on the country, ‘legal highs’ can indeed be found, but this is not the case in France. A distinction must therefore be made between Dutch smartshops and French smartshops.
Products sold in smartshops
Smartshops sell a wide variety of products designed to:
- Stimulate creativity and imagination,
- Promote a clear, focused and calm state of mind,
- Increase physical and mental stamina,
- Induce euphoria, stabilise mood, and promote better social interaction.
Although each shop has its own selection, most offer herbs, teas, dietary supplements and gadgets related to improving well-being. Some of these products are traditional, whilst others are innovative and introduce new or improved formulations.
It is essential to note that these shops make it a point of honour to comply with local regulations. All products sold are legal in the country of operation, and owners often strive to provide detailed information on the use and benefits of their products.
Among the most popular products in smartshops are happy caps and nootropics.
Happy caps
‘Happy caps’ are dietary supplements designed to induce various mood states, ranging from relaxation to euphoria or energy. They generally contain blends of herbs and other natural ingredients that help stimulate the body and mind.
Nootropics
Nootropics, on the other hand, are substances that claim to improve cognitive abilities, particularly memory, concentration and creativity. These products, popular with those seeking to optimise their mental performance, can be of natural or synthetic origin.
In Smartshops, the focus is generally on natural nootropics, such as Rhodiola root, Cordyceps or Ginkgo biloba. These can be found in Happy Caps but also in ‘magic mushrooms’.
It is always advisable to research and inform yourself before using these products, in order to understand their effects and potential interactions.

Why do nootropics and happy caps work?
The way “happy caps” and nootropics work is based on the interaction of their active ingredients with the central nervous system and other systems in the human body.
- Active ingredients: ‘Happy caps’ often contain blends of herbs and other natural substances whose chemical components can affect mood and energy levels. For example, certain herbs can stimulate the release of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, which is associated with feelings of well-being.
- Nootropics: These substances work by altering the activity of certain neurotransmitters or by optimising blood flow to the brain. For example, Ginkgo biloba is known to improve cerebral blood flow, which can help enhance concentration and memory. Other nootropics can increase the availability of neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine, which plays a crucial role in memory and learning.
- Synergy of ingredients : In many products, ingredients are combined in such a way that their effects reinforce one another. This synergy can make the product more effective than the sum of its parts.
- Placebo: It is also important to note the placebo effect. If a person believes that a product will improve their mood or cognitive abilities, this belief alone can lead to an improvement.
It is crucial to understand that although some individuals may report benefits from these products, effectiveness can vary from person to person depending on individual chemistry, tolerance, age and other factors. Furthermore, whilst some studies support the benefits of nootropics, further research is needed to confirm their long-term effects and safety.
Where can you buy nootropic products and Happy Caps?
Smartshops are there to supply you with unusual products and provide information. However, you must choose reputable shops! There are very few ‘physical’ smartshops in France, as the Dutch model of these shops is not viewed favourably by legislators.
Remember that in France, products sold in smartshops must not:
- Be psychoactive or cause dependence
- Imply the idea of a ‘legal drug’
To choose the right shop and ensure you establish a good relationship of trust with your seller, you must therefore select a smartshop that complies with current regulations.
In France, smartshops are mainly found online. A notable feature of smartshops is their commitment to consumer education. Unlike other retailers, these shops often seek to inform their customers about the products they are buying. Choose a transparent smartshop that clearly lists the – legal – ingredients of their products.
Furthermore, responsibility is a central pillar of smartshop ethics. They ensure that customers are of legal age to purchase certain products and encourage responsible and informed use. It is best to choose an online shop that adheres to these ethical principles.

Challenges Facing Smartshops
Like any commercial sector, smartshops face challenges. Changing regulations and legislative differences between European countries can complicate their operations. Furthermore, public scepticism and mistrust towards certain products require continuous and transparent communication.
However, with the rise in interest in personal wellbeing and natural approaches to health, the future looks promising for smartshops. These products operate in a similar context to CBD (cannabidiol). As more and more people seek alternatives to conventional methods, these shops are well-placed to meet this growing demand.
