CBD for dogs: is it really effective?
In recent years, the use of CBD in animals – and particularly in dogs – has been increasing significantly. Indeed, the supposed anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties of CBD could, according to certain scientific studies, help to alleviate certain ailments linked to osteoarthritis, a condition from which our four-legged friends may suffer as they age. That is why, in this article, we invite you to discover the potential benefits of CBD for your pet and our advice on how to administer it correctly on a daily basis.
Key takeaways:
- CBD may help alleviate osteoarthritis in dogs thanks to its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.
- Before using CBD, consult a vet and start with a small dose to observe your dog’s reaction.
- CBD oil is recommended for easy administration, with specific dosages depending on the dog’s size.
- Choose CBD products specifically designed for animals, following your vet’s dosage advice.
What is osteoarthritis in dogs?
Osteoarthritis in dogs is a condition characterised by the progressive and irreversible deterioration of the cartilage in the animal’s joints, particularly in the hips, knees and elbows.
This condition can be particularly painful for the animal, particularly due to its inflammatory nature, and falls into two distinct categories:
-
primary osteoarthritis: this is caused by cartilage erosion and a decline in regenerative capacity, brought about by the ageing of the animal;
-
secondary osteoarthritis: this type of condition can occur in puppies with hip dysplasia, suffering from poorly reduced fractures or ligament tears, for example.
What are the benefits of CBD for dogs suffering from osteoarthritis?
As mentioned at the start of this article and according to a scientific study conducted by Joe Wakshlag, Professor and Head of the Nutrition Department at Cornell University, CBD is said to have anti-inflammatory properties and may be able to relieve certain chronic pains associated with osteoarthritis in dogs.
Furthermore, unlike certain anti-inflammatory drugs commonly prescribed for the treatment of osteoarthritis in dogs, CBD does not appear to have any significant side effects on your pet. Furthermore, it is important to note that this substance is not considered psychoactive and therefore does not cause any dependence following consumption.
At the same time, it is worth noting that several other scientific studies tend to demonstrate the positive effects of CBD on stress and anxiety in our four-legged friends. Giving your dog CBD could also help to protect its cardiovascular system, as well as its nervous system, making this molecule your pet’s best ally for everyday wellbeing!
Before starting treatment…
Before you start giving your pet a CBD-based treatment, we recommend that you follow these few tips:
-
consult a vet: to ensure your dog’s well-being, we strongly recommend that you speak to your vet before making any changes to their diet;
-
start with a small amount of CBD: although the risk of side effects is generally considered to be quite low, scientific studies on this subject are still ongoing. To be on the safe side, we therefore suggest you start with a small amount of the product and observe your dog’s reaction before increasing the dose;
-
once treatment has begun, check in regularly with your vet: this step is particularly important if you have been giving your dog CBD for a few days without seeing any results. It is essential to seek the advice of this animal health professional before potentially increasing the dosage for your pet.

Our advice on giving CBD to your dog
Have you received the all-clear from your vet and now want to start giving CBD to your dog?
Here are our tips to ensure everything goes smoothly!
Choose the right method of administration
First of all, you’ll need to choose the method of administration best suited to your habits and preferences.
You can choose either CBD oil or CBD tablets. Please note, however, that oil is generally much easier to give to a dog, particularly as you can administer it directly under your pet’s tongue or mix it into their food.
Sixty8’s CBD oil for pets is flavoured with chicken (for dogs) or fish (for cats), which makes the oil much more pleasant for your pets to take.
Choose the right dosage
Some vets recommend following these guidelines to determine the ideal dosage of CBD oil for your pet:
-
if you have a small dog, use a maximum of 6 drops of CBD oil per day ;
-
if you have a medium-sized dog, a maximum of 12 drops of oil per day is recommended ;
-
if you have a large dog, you can give them up to 15 drops of CBD per day at most.
Please note, however, that these doses may vary from one dog to another, particularly depending on its weight, its age and the severity of the pain it is experiencing. This is why it is essential to seek advice from a vet before starting a CBD-based treatment to relieve your dog’s joint pain.
Finally, please be aware that CBD should not be regarded as a miracle cure. Keep an eye on your pet’s reactions and do not hesitate to discuss your observations with a veterinary professional.
