H4CBD: A legal alternative to HHC?
CBG9, THCP, THCJD, H4CBD, HHCP and HHCPO are now banned in France. Discover CBD as an alternative!
With HHC and its two derivatives, HHCP and HHCO, having just been classified as controlled substances by the ANSM (French National Agency for Medicines and Health Products Safety), many of you have been wondering about the legality of H4CBD.
Is hydrogenated cannabidiol (H4CBD), also known as tetrahydrocannabidiol (THD), permitted for sale, purchase and consumption? Today, we answer all your questions!
Key takeaways:
- H4CBD, or hydrogenated cannabidiol, is legal in France, unlike the recently banned HHC.
- It offers more potent effects than traditional CBD thanks to the addition of hydrogen atoms.
- H4CBD is legal if the product contains less than 0.2% THC, in accordance with European legislation.
- It is intended for relaxation, particularly in the evening, and should be consumed with caution to avoid adverse effects.

What is hydrogenated cannabidiol?
As its name suggests, H4CBD is a cannabinoid similar to CBD. The difference lies in the addition of hydrogen atoms to the main molecule. These atoms enable better communication between the cannabinoid and our endocannabinoid system.
In other words, hydrogenated CBD is a cannabinoid derived from hemp that has the advantage of producing more pronounced effects than traditional CBD (cannabidiol).
Is H4CBD legal?
Yes, H4CBD is legal. Unlike HHC, which has just been banned by the ANSM with the support of the Department of Health, hydrogenated cannabidiol is still available over the counter… and that’s not likely to change!
Indeed, hydrogenated cannabidiol is not affected by the legal uncertainty surrounding HHC and its derivatives. Whilst it also appears to cause adverse effects for some, these potential effects do not seem as intense as they were with HHC or HHCP products. Moreover, there appears to be no evidence to support these adverse effects.
Furthermore, hydrogenated cannabidiol is legal in France. You can buy and consume it without risking breaking the law.
Of course, H4CBD is legal only if the hydrogenated cannabidiol product complies with THC legislation, namely a tetrahydrocannabinol content of less than 0.2% in Europe.
Why is H4CBD legal?
HHC, HHCP and HHCO have been banned because they appeared to replicate, to a certain extent, the effects of THC. The ANSM has highlighted side effects that are too significant to allow for their safe sale. You can also read their report on the official website.
H4CBD does not appear to be in such an ambiguous position. Unlike HHC and its derivatives, it is not derived from the breakdown or modification of THC. It is said not to have such intense effects and is instead a ‘boosted’ version of cannabidiol (CBD), which is legal and non-psychoactive.
In other words, the concerns surrounding HHC do not appear to apply to H4CBD.
The effects of H4CBD
Hydrogenated cannabidiol and its effects
The effects of H4CBD are similar to those of CBD… but better! As we mentioned, hydrogenated cannabidiol gets on well with our CB1 and CB2 receptors, which gives it greater potential for action. Some say that hydrogenated cannabidiol (or THD) is 100 times more potent than CBD. A godsend for those under a lot of stress or those who want to unwind in the evening after a long day…
Among the most notable effects are:
- A reduction in pain sensations. Like CBD, H4CBD appears to counteract the pain signals sent by the receptors.
- A feeling of hunger. Unlike THCV, H4CBD appears to stimulate appetite.
- A boost to creativity and thinking. Hydrogenated cannabidiol appears to be a cannabinoid that supports the imagination! It is said to encourage branching thought processes and mental alertness. Perfect for a meditative conversation with oneself!
- Increased motivation. As well as creativity, H4CBD seems to foster a positive state of mind.
- Reduced physical and mental stress. Muscle relaxation and mental calm – that’s what you can expect from hydrogenated cannabidiol.
Are there any recommendations?
H4CBD is a wellness compound, like all cannabinoids. It should not be used as a substitute for medical advice or treatment; it is not a medicine!
Unlike traditional cannabidiol, H4CBD is not recommended for daytime use. It is intended for relaxation in the evening, once all the day’s tasks have been completed. Why? It may cause some side effects such as nausea, anxiety or even impaired motor coordination.
Also, please do not drive, work, operate dangerous machinery or supervise children after consuming H4CBD.
Do not consume if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or undergoing medical treatment. Keep out of the reach and sight of children and pets.
