CBN: What is Cannabinol?
Within the cannabinoid family, CBD and THC are molecules that hardly need any introduction. However, this is not the case for CBN, which remains a rather mysterious compound to many! Currently being studied by scientists to determine its potential therapeutic properties, this cannabinoid has not yet revealed all its secrets! A closer look at the origins of this compound, its potential benefits for the body, and the various factors that distinguish it from CBD and THC.
Key takeaways:
- CBN is a cannabinoid produced by the ageing of THC, with no notable psychoactive effects.
- It differs from THC in its effects, which are potentially soothing and carry no risk of addiction.
- CBN may have benefits for eye and skin conditions, and may stimulate the appetite.
- Although related to THC, CBN is not classified as an illicit substance in France, but remains largely unregulated.

The definition of CBN
CBN, or cannabinol, is one of the cannabinoids derived from the hemp plant, just like CBD, CBG or THC, for example. However, CBN differs from its counterparts in that it is not actually produced by the cannabis plant. In fact, this molecule is actually a degraded form of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). It results from the ageing or overexposure of THC to sunlight and air.
In other words, THC goes through three stages of development: whilst within the cannabis plant, it is in its acidic form (THCa). Once extracted and after undergoing a decarboxylation process, this acidic form transforms into THC. Finally, as THC breaks down, it transforms once again into CBN.
What is the difference between CBN and THC?
Although it is actually the result of THC breaking down, CBN appears to be a harmless compound.
As a reminder, THC is a psychoactive molecule: its consumption can cause psychotropic effects (feelings of euphoria, reduced alertness, dependence, etc.). This is why it remains illegal in France and several other European countries.
CBN, on the other hand, does not appear to have the same effects as THC. On the contrary, certain scientific studies seem to attribute soothing and therapeutic properties to it. It therefore does not cause any form of dependence or side effects that are potentially harmful to health.
What is the difference between CBN and CBD?
CBN and CBD have a fairly similar molecular structure. However, these two compounds do not have the same origin and do not interact with the body in the same way. Indeed, CBD already exists within the hemp plant in its acidic form (CBDa). This is not the case with CBN, which is derived from THC.
Like most cannabinoids, both CBD and CBN interact with the human body’s endocannabinoid receptors. However, CBN appears to be less readily processed by the body compared to CBD.
Although CBN differs from CBD, it is still quite similar, particularly in terms of its potential effects on the human body. We will explore this further in the rest of this article.

What are the potential benefits of cannabinol for the body?
Several scientific studies have highlighted the potential effects of CBN on the human body. Among other things, this molecule could help alleviate certain conditions, a short list of which we have compiled in the rest of this article.
CBN, glaucoma and other eye problems
Firstly, CBN could have an impact on the treatment of glaucoma and other eye problems.
According to a scientific study conducted on cats in 1984, both CBD and CBG (cannabigerol) appear to have a positive effect on reducing intraocular pressure. As intraocular pressure is considered the primary risk factor for developing glaucoma, this hypothesis could prove highly beneficial in preventing risks in certain individuals. However, it is important to bear in mind that these results are still at a preliminary stage. Further scientific studies will need to be carried out to confirm these findings in the future.
CBN and skin conditions
According to another scientific study, CBD may also have a positive impact on skin conditions, such as psoriasis, for example. Its potential anti-inflammatory properties could also help combat redness, acne flare-ups and skin irritation.
Cannabinol and loss of appetite
As CBN is actually a breakdown product of THC, it may have inherited some of its characteristics, particularly with regard to increased appetite.
Indeed, THC consumption is thought to stimulate the appetite, and a 2012 study conducted on rats also appears to show that the use of CBN helps to increase hunger in the various subjects. If this hypothesis is confirmed in the future, it could prove highly beneficial to the scientific community, particularly in the treatment of patients with serious conditions (cancer, AIDS, etc.).
Other potential benefits of cannabinol…
In addition to the potential benefits mentioned above, cannabinol may also have other effects on the body. These include, in particular, its potential anti-convulsant and neuroprotective properties, recently highlighted by two scientific studies. Other recent research has also highlighted the potential action of CBD on various antibiotic-resistant staphylococci.
Finally, CBN remains a subject of particular scientific interest due to its potential sedative properties, which appear to be significantly stronger than those of THC or CBD. A study dating from 1970, conducted on humans on a small scale, has also shown that oral administration of CBN alone and of CBN combined with THC induces a higher level of drowsiness than administration of THC alone.
Is CBN legal in France?
In fact, CBN does not fall into the category of illicit substances. However, it is derived from THC, which remains prohibited in France. The legislation on this subject remains rather vague for the time being. Whilst the consumption of CBN is therefore not prohibited in France, we nevertheless recommend that you exercise caution and contact the local authorities if you wish to obtain further information on this subject.
