How to choose the right cannabis grinder? - Sixty8 Blog
A grinder is an accessory used to grind CBD flowers for consumption via inhalation. It is fitted with blades designed to chop the plant, making it finer and easier to roll. Depending on how you intend to use your grinder, you can choose from a range of models: from manual to electric and from the smallest to the largest. Find out everything you need to know about grinders, as well as all our tips on how to use this essential tool!
Key takeaways:
- Grinders grind CBD flowers for inhalation, available in wood, PVC, metal and aluminium.
- Different types of blades (shark, fin, diamond) ensure effective grinding.
- Using a grinder optimises airflow and the availability of cannabinoids during vaporisation.
- The size of the grinder depends on your consumption habits, with options ranging from mini to large.

Different types of grinders
Grinders come in various categories, particularly depending on the material from which they are made.
Here is a list of the most common grinders on the market:
-
- the wooden grinder: wood, which is very durable and attractive, is known to be the oldest material used to make grinders. However, please note that this type of model tends to get dirty quite quickly and may ‘contaminate’ your CBD and tobacco after long-term use;
-
- the PVC or acrylic grinder: this inexpensive material is ideal if you want to buy a grinder, even if you are on a tight budget. Bear in mind, however, that PVC and acrylic are not among the most durable materials over time;
-
- the metal grinder: this model proves to be an ideal compromise, combining durability, strength and affordability. It ensures quick and efficient grinding, whilst remaining lightweight and often quite stylish;
-
- the aluminium grinder: if you’re looking for a highly durable accessory, the aluminium grinder is for you. Note, however, that its price is slightly higher than the other models we have just presented. They are generally CNC-machined, which guarantees a perfect finish.

Good to know: on the market, you can also find card grinders which, as their name suggests, come in the form of a card or a small grater. Electric grinders, with or without pollen collectors, are high-end alternatives that are particularly effective, but require a higher budget. |
The blades of a grinder
To be able to grind the plant, a grinder must be equipped with sharp blades!
Here too, you will find different types of blades on the market, depending in particular on the type of grinder you have chosen:
-
- shark teeth: generally, this type of tooth is found on plastic grinders and/or low-cost models;
-
- fin-shaped or diamond-shaped teeth: this is the most common shape. This type of grinder blade allows you to grind CBD flowers quickly and efficiently. Note that higher-end metal grinders are generally fitted with this type of blade ;
-
- blade-type teeth and graters: these last two types of teeth are reserved respectively for electric grinders and card grinders.
What is the main advantage of a grinder?
By finely grinding the flower, the grinder ensures an optimal airflow when consuming your CBD.
Similarly, if you use a vaporiser, a grinder can be useful in making the terpenes and cannabinoids more “accessible” during the vaporisation process.
In short, a grinder allows you to consume your product more “effectively”.
How do you choose the size of a grinder?
The choice of grinder size depends largely on your consumption habits. If you generally only grind a small amount of CBD at a time, it is best to use a small grinder. Otherwise, you may need to consider slightly larger grinders, capable of holding a greater volume of flower.
This factor remains very important when choosing your grinder. Indeed, it will affect the pressure exerted on the flower during grinding, as well as the fineness of the result.
Here is a brief summary of the different grinder sizes available on the market:
-
- mini grinders: these small grinders have a diameter of between 40 and 50 mm. Particularly discreet, they are perfect for travelling and are suitable for grinding 1/2g per use;
-
- medium-sized grinders: these measure between 62 and 70 mm in diameter. These models are easy to carry and offer a little more space for grinding your flowers than mini-grinders. They can also grind 2 to 3g per use;
-
- large grinders: with a diameter of 75 mm, these grinders can grind between 3.5 and 7g of coarse or fine material in a single go. This type of equipment is not particularly recommended for use on the go. However, they are ideal if you wish to grind a large volume of CBD flower in a single go.

Good to know: some types of grinder (polinator) are fitted with a filter and/or a small chamber allowing you to collect the pollen released by the buds during grinding. |
How to use a grinder?
Not sure how to use your grinder? Here are a few tips to get you started.
Generally speaking, the way a grinder works doesn’t vary much from one model to another. When you open it, you will see the different parts that make it up:
-
- a compartment for holding the CBD;
-
- a compartment in the lid that allows you to activate the grinding mechanism;
-
- a final compartment that acts as a collection tray for pollen and fine particles (available only in pollinator grinders).
Start by breaking your CBD flowers into pieces, so that you can place them in the grinding chamber. Once you have done this, replace the lid and activate the grinding mechanism until you have achieved the desired fineness. That’s it!
|
Good to know: if your grinder has two parts, you will find your ground flower in the same compartment where you placed it in the first place. If your grinder consists of 3 parts, the flower will then fall into a collection chamber as it is cut. |
You now know all the features of a grinder.
All that’s left for you to do is make the right choice!
