CBD oil: Number of drops, dosage and advice
Since its reputation has been restored, thanks to numerous studies by the scientific community, cannabidiol – or CBD – is increasingly being used by the general public for its natural soothing, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anti-stress properties. Extracted from the hemp flower, this non-psychoactive cannabinoid comes in many forms (CBD flowers, resins, infusions, capsules, oils…). Among the various forms in which cannabidiol is found, CBD oil is particularly prized for its ease of use, its effectiveness and the precision of its cannabinoid concentration.
CBD oil offers numerous positive effects for the body. You can consume it by placing a few drops directly under the tongue, in herbal teas, in a vaporiser or even in your recipes. But what is the best way for you to use CBD oil? How should you take CBD oil?
Key takeaways:
- CBD oil is valued for its ease of use and positive effects.
- There are three types of CBD oil: full spectrum, broad spectrum, and isolate.
- It can be taken sublingually, in infusions, or using a vaporiser.
- Choose the oil based on your needs and opt for organic products for better results.

What is CBD oil?
Hemp oil & CBD oil
Cannabidiol oil is, quite simply, an oil containing CBD, a non-psychoactive cannabinoid that occurs naturally in the flowers and leaves of the hemp plant.
There are two ways to obtain high-quality CBD hemp oil:
- Directly from the flowers and leaves. This is known as cold-pressed CBD oil.
- By adding cannabidiol to a neutral edible oil, such as coconut oil. The cannabidiol is extracted from the hemp plant and concentrated to 99% in the form of an isolate, then incorporated into a base of coconut or olive oil.
Three types of spectrum
There are three ‘spectra’ of CBD oil: broad-spectrum oil, full-spectrum oil and isolate.
- Full-spectrum CBD oil is an oil that contains all the cannabinoids naturally present in the hemp plant. It therefore contains (legal) traces of THC, below 0.2%.
- Broad-spectrum CBD oil is an oil that has been specifically extracted to remove all traces of THC. Broad-spectrum oil still contains the other cannabinoids naturally present in the hemp plant, such as CBG and CBC. The effects of broad-spectrum CBD oil are milder. This cannabidiol oil, containing no traces of THC, is more suitable for regular daytime use.
- The isolate is a distinct category containing only CBD (with no other cannabinoids). Most CBD hemp oils are made using these pure, organic cannabidiol crystals.

Different concentrations of CBD oil
There are different concentrations of cannabidiol in hemp oils. You can find oils containing 5% CBD as well as those containing 30%. The choice of hemp oil depends mainly on the consumer’s needs.
If the issue to be addressed is very severe, one should opt for higher concentrations, such as 30% CBD oil. If the aim is to provide regular, microdosed treatment, a 5% cannabidiol oil will do the trick!
How to use your CBD oil correctly?
Identifying your needs
Before using it, you need to identify your specific needs. The dosage of cannabidiol is not entirely independent of each individual’s personal experience. Before buying your cannabidiol oil, ask yourself the right questions:
1. Do you want to use your cannabidiol oil to relieve significant pain?
If so, a 5% concentration may be too weak. Conversely, if you are looking for a gentle, microdosed effect, 30% CBD oil may be too strong.
2. Is this your first time using it?
If this is your first time, it is not advisable to start with a strong CBD oil. Opt for a broad-spectrum cannabidiol oil with a concentration of less than 15%. Cannabidiol produces different effects and benefits depending on the individual. You should gradually find the right dosage for you.
3. Do you wish to take your CBD during the day?
If you wish to use your CBD oil during the day, it is better to opt for a broad-spectrum oil. The effects are milder. If, on the other hand, you wish to use hemp oil to help you sleep, and a broad-spectrum oil is not strong enough, you may wish to opt for a full-spectrum oil.
Understanding the different dosages
There are different types of dosage. The desired effects and benefits will vary significantly depending on the CBD oil chosen and the method of administration. Dr Leonard Leinow distinguishes three types of dosage:
- CBD microdosing: between 0.5 and 20 mg of cannabidiol per day. This dosage is thought to have a regulating effect in the long term, particularly on sleep, stress and metabolic disorders.
- Standard dosage: between 10 and 100 mg of cannabidiol per day. This dosage primarily targets pain, anxiety and inflammation.
- High-dose CBD: between 50 and 800 mg of cannabidiol per day. These so-called therapeutic doses are intended for people suffering from serious conditions and must be strictly supervised by a healthcare professional.
Before buying CBD oil, it is best to discuss your needs with a doctor. Please note that cannabidiol is not a medicine, although it is available in pharmacies. The WHO recommends not exceeding 200 mg of cannabidiol per day.

Depending on how you feel and the type of dosage you choose, you could, for example, opt for a 15% cannabidiol oil, where each drop contains approximately 7.5 mg of cannabidiol (up to 26 drops per day), or a 30% oil, where each drop contains 15 mg of CBD (up to 13 drops per day). The concentration of your oil should match your expectations.
The best CBD oil: how to choose it?
As you will have realised, everyone has their own ‘best CBD oil’. You should choose your oil based on your needs, which will vary depending on your personal experience. To form your own opinion, you can start with low doses and increase them as required. Some cannabidiol oils are also specially formulated to address a specific need.

CBD oil: how should it be taken?
There are several ways to use CBD oil. The most well-known methods are:
- The sublingual method. Place a few drops of hemp oil under your tongue and leave it there for 30 seconds before swallowing. This method provides immediate effects.
- In a herbal tea. A few drops in your herbal tea and you’ll feel gently relaxed for several hours.
- In a meal. To consume your cannabidiol discreetly and on a daily basis.
- Using a suitable vaporiser, which vaporises the oil. The cannabidiol oil then has an immediate effect as the CBD molecules easily pass through the respiratory tract.
