How to use a weed grinder?
A grinder is an essential tool for all fans of smoked CBD. It breaks down CBD flowers into fine crumbs, making them easier to roll and more enjoyable to consume. However, if you’ve never used a grinder before, don’t panic! Sixty8 has put together this short guide to help you learn everything you need to know about using this handy tool.
Key points:
- Grinders come in electric, two-piece, four-piece and card versions, each with its own specific features.
- To use, remove the lid, place the CBD flowers inside, replace the lid, and turn to grind.
- Four-piece grinders allow you to collect kief, a high-quality CBD extract.
- After use, clean your grinder to maintain its durability and the quality of the ground CBD.
The main types of grinder
The first thing to know about grinders is that there isn’t just one type! In fact, there are three main types of grinders, and each can be used in a different way.
The electric grinder
The electric grinder is the easiest tool to use. The reason is quite simple: it does everything automatically! All you need to do is add your CBD flowers to the dedicated chamber before letting the tool grind everything up by itself.
However, this type of grinder can sometimes be a little too powerful for a small amount of flowers: it risks grinding your CBD into particles that are too fine to be used. We therefore recommend that you only use this type of grinder if you have a fairly large quantity of CBD flowers to grind in one go.
The two-piece grinder
This type of wooden, plastic or steel grinder is one of the most common on the market. It consists of two parts that fit together to grind the hemp flowers. The inner surfaces of the two stacked parts are fitted with metal teeth that grind the flowers.
This type of grinder has a chamber for holding your hemp flowers, but no collection chamber for the CBD particles. This feature can make it difficult to collect only the CBD particles, which remain mixed with the ground flower residue.
The four-piece grinder
These are truly the most popular grinders among users. Whilst this type of grinder works in exactly the same way as the one we have just described, it has a third chamber that allows you to collect kief (CBD pollen) as well. This type of grinder therefore offers the possibility of obtaining a high-quality CBD extract, highly concentrated in cannabinoids and easier to collect and place in a rolled cigarette.
The card grinder
This type of grinder is not very common on the market, but it is fairly easy to carry and store. It is essentially a small grater that allows you to chop CBD flowers quickly and easily. A card grinder can prove to be a practical and effective solution for occasional use, for example.
Using a grinder: instructions
Now that you know the different types of grinders available on the market, here is a slightly more detailed guide to teach you how to use a two- or four-piece grinder correctly:
-
Remove the lid from your grinder
This is the first step in using your grinder correctly: removing the lid will give you access to the main chamber. This is where you can placeyour CBD flowers. Crush any flowers that are a bit too large with your fingers so they fit into this chamber. Be careful! Do not place any material in the centre of the chamber: this is where the grinder’s mechanism rotates, so any material in the centre will not be ground effectively.
-
Replace the grinder’s lid and start grinding
Once the lid has been replaced on the first chamber, ensure that everything is tightly sealed. Then turn the lid 10 to 15 times clockwise, whilst applying gentle pressure to the lid with the palm of your hand. Take a few breaks to tap the sides of the grinder to ensure all your CBD flowers are properly ground during the process.
-
Unscrew the grinder and collect your crumbs
Once you have ground your CBD flowers properly, carefully open the lid of your grinder. Be careful not to spill everything: bits of CBD may have stuck to the sides and could fall out when you open the lid. Then collect the ground crumbs and place them in your rolled cigarette. That’s it!
-
If you have a pollen collection chamber…
If you’re using a grinder with three chambers, don’t forget to collect the CBD kief from the last chamber of your tool! You can also add this residue to your CBD joint, or save it to make CBD resin or moonrocks, for example.

Good to know: after using your grinder, don’t forget to clean it to ensure its longevity and the quality of your CBD trimmings! |
How do you roll a CBD joint?
Now that you’ve collected your CBD crumbs, all you need to do is mix them with your rolling tobacco so you can smoke it. Here are a few tips for rolling the perfect CBD joint!
Firstly, bear in mind that rolling a CBD joint successfully takes a little practice and getting used to. Take a rolling paper and fold it in half lengthways, making sure the sticky strip is facing upwards and towards you. Place your mixture of CBD and tobacco on the paper and make sure to distribute the material evenly. Be careful not to put too much in!
Next, pack down your mixture, then insert your filter. Roll the tobacco between your fingers to shape your joint, then pinch the non-sticky edge of the paper between the filter and the second layer of the paper. Gently roll the whole thing up, making sure to keep the mixture fairly tight between your fingers and the paper. Once the paper is rolled, moisten the sticky strip and seal it.
Pack your joint by tapping the side of the filter on a table, then seal it by twisting the paper on the other side. That’s it! All that’s left is to enjoy your CBD joint!

Warning: smoking releases toxic fumes that are harmful to your health. We strongly recommend that you choose an alternative method of consuming your CBD (vaping, dietary supplements, sublingual oils, etc.). |
Now, your grinder holds no secrets for you! We hope you make good use of all these tips!
