What are the side effects of CBD oil?
Several scientific studies suggest that hemp oil may offer numerous potential health benefits, particularly when consumed consistently and in reasonable quantities. However, it is important to note that an overdose of CBD oil could, in some cases, negate these benefits and cause certain side effects, which are nevertheless quite rare and generally mild. This is what we will explore together in the rest of this article.
Key takeaways:
- Side effects of CBD oil are rare and generally mild, including dry mouth and dizziness.
- Excessive consumption can sometimes cause nausea, insomnia or drowsiness.
- Diarrhoea and loss of appetite are possible but uncommon side effects.
- Side effects are often due to an overdose and disappear after a few hours.

What is hemp oil?
Hemp oil is a vegetable oil obtained by cold-pressing the seeds of the cannabis plant. It is composed of omega-9 (unsaturated fatty acids), omega-3 and omega-6, stearic acids, as well as vitamins A, E and B, which are essential for the body.
Hemp oil differs from CBD oil in its manufacturing process. Indeed, CBD oil is obtained by extracting the cannabis stems and leaves, which separates the cannabidiol molecules from the plant material, thereby increasing its concentration for therapeutic purposes.

What are the notable side effects of hemp oil?
In some people, excessive consumption of hemp oil can sometimes cause certain notable side effects. However, a scientific study published in 2006 in the Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research suggests that acute use of CBD oil does not appear to cause any toxic effects on the body. Indeed, hemp oil remains a natural oil and would therefore only cause mild potential side effects in a few rare cases.
Dry mouth
A scientific study from 2006 suggests that CB1 and CB2 endocannabinoid receptors are present in the salivary glands. When these are activated, saliva production may be affected and reduced, which can lead to a sensation of dry mouth.
To remedy this, simply drink a glass of water or fruit juice to stimulate the salivary glands.
Dizziness and light-headedness
This type of side effect is actually linked to a drop in blood pressure, which can, in some cases, be caused by consuming CBD oil. This type of discomfort caused by an overdose of CBD oil is generally temporary and harmless.
If you experience this type of side effect, we recommend lying down for a few minutes and eating a sugary snack, such as a piece of chocolate.

Warning: if you already suffer from blood pressure problems and/or are taking medication to treat this condition, we strongly recommend that you consult your doctor before starting to use CBD |
Nausea
Among the side effects observed by scientists, nausea remains fairly rare. In fact, CBD appears, on the contrary, to have a beneficial effect in treating this condition. However, it is still possible that some people may experience some gastric discomfort following the ingestion of too large a quantity of CBD oil.
This type of side effect is generally quite mild and disappears quickly. If you experience this discomfort, we recommend reducing the dose of hemp oil you take or changing the way you consume CBD.
Insomnia and the risk of drowsiness
Whilst CBD tends to show potential benefits for people prone to various sleep disorders, it can, in rare cases, have the opposite effect. Indeed, insomnia can sometimes be caused by taking too much CBD before going to bed. At the same time, it is important to note that consuming too much hemp oil can also cause drowsiness during the day.
To minimise these side effects of hemp oil, we suggest you find the right dosage for your body! Start by taking small doses of CBD, then gradually increase them until achieve the desired effect. Conversely, do not hesitate to reduce the dose if you start to experience any adverse effects.

Loss of appetite
In some cases, taking CBD oil may also lead to a loss of appetite. Whilst this effect may be desired by some users, you should exercise caution if you feel you are losing your appetite and continue to eat a balanced and regular diet.
Diarrhoea
Diarrhoea is another fairly rare side effect observed in some CBD oil users. If you experience this condition, we recommend that you stop using the oil and consult your doctor, particularly if the diarrhoea lasts for several days and is accompanied by stomach ache.

Did you know? The risk of an allergy to CBD oil appears to be particularly low. However, if you suffer from multiple allergies, we recommend seeking advice from your allergist before starting to use CBD oil. |
Is it dangerous to use CBD oil?
As we discovered at the start of this article,CBD oil is composed of cannabidiol. This cannabinoid molecule is not thought to pose any danger to humans or animals.
An overdose of CBD oil will not have any serious adverse effects on your health. However, it may cause some rather unpleasant side effects, such as those we have listed earlier in this article. Nevertheless, don’t panic! These effects should subside after a few hours. Furthermore, we recommend that you contact your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms potentially caused by hemp oil, so that they can advise you on how to deal with this type of problem.

Contraindications for CBD
Although the use of CBD oil does not, in principle, pose any major health risks, it is still advisable to consult a doctor before consuming it in certain circumstances.
Hemp oil and pregnancy
It is important to note that most CBD oils contain minute traces of THC (less than 0.2%). These residues of the psychoactive molecule can be absorbed by the foetus and may prove harmful to its development. Before consuming CBD, we therefore recommend that you consult your gynaecologist to seek their advice on the matter.
CBD oil and Parkinson’s disease
If you have Parkinson’s disease, you should consult a doctor before using CBD oil. Some scientific studies have shown that excessive consumption of hemp oil could increase muscle tremors in certain patients with this condition.
Hemp oil and blood clotting disorders
A scientific study from 2007 also highlighted the potential impact of CBD oil consumption on people with haemophilia. Indeed, CBD oil can cause clotting problems in this type of patient and should therefore be used with caution and in moderation. Once again, we recommend that you consult your GP before starting to use CBD if you suffer from this type of disorder.
