CBD oil for sleep: does it work?
More and more people are turning to cannabidiol oil to help them sleep. This new trend hasn’t come out of nowhere: the CBD molecule is said to have sleep-promoting properties, and the oil is considered a particularly effective way to take it. Today, we can say without hesitation that CBD oil – especially when it is organic – promotes sleep. Cannabidiol, by acting on the endocannabinoid system, is thought to induce prolonged relaxation, which promotes restorative sleep. But why does cannabidiol oil work? Are there specific methods of administration for better effects on sleep?
Key takeaways:
- Organic CBD oil is effective at improving sleep thanks to its interaction with the endocannabinoid system.
- It acts on the causes of insomnia such as stress, anxiety and chronic pain.
- The sublingual method offers high bioavailability, allowing for rapid and effective absorption of CBD.
- Choosing a CBD oil suited to your needs helps to optimise its effects on sleep.
Why does CBD oil affect sleep?
The endocannabinoid system and cannabidiol
The endocannabinoid system. A complex-sounding term describing something simple. The endocannabinoid system is a system common to all mammals, comprising, amongst other things, CB1 and CB2 receptors.
These receptors are present in almost all our cells and are particularly active in our nervous, immune, cardiovascular and digestive systems. They play a regulatory role, notably in the management of stress, pain and our inflammatory responses.
In other words, the endocannabinoid system governs physiological functions to achieve a certain physical and mental balance.
Cannabidiol is a ‘phytocannabinoid’, which means it is capable of interacting with the cannabinoid receptors in our body.
When you consume cannabidiol oil, the CBD molecules interact with the endocannabinoid system and support its natural regulatory role. Among the most notable effects on the body are pain-relieving, anti-inflammatory, soothing and stress-relieving properties.
CBD oil: does it affect sleep?
It is precisely because cannabidiol interacts with our endocannabinoid system that it can lead to better sleep. In fact, CBD is thought to be able to regulate our circadian rhythm indirectly by alleviating our sense of stress, muscle tension and even pain.
The main causes of insomnia are:
- Anxiety and stress, which lead to intrusive thoughts, a rapid heart rate and disturbed sleep.
- Chronic pain (such as restless legs syndrome or rheumatism)
- An irregular lifestyle.
- Overstimulation (caffeine, light, noisy environments, smoking)
- Nocturnal asthma, sleep apnoea.
In short, there are many reasons that contribute to sleep disturbances. Most people who suffer from sleep disorders report a lack of rest and non-restorative sleep.
It is therefore important to address this lack of rest, as it can lead to a significant drop in morale and a feeling of constant fatigue. A lack of rest is thought to increase the risk of obesity, depression, cardiovascular disease and certain cancers. It is also thought to be responsible for mood disorders, a lack of alertness and a weakened immune system.
CBD oil is not a medicine and should not replace medical supervision. However, it can help alleviate the causes of insomnia, such as pain and stress. Cannabidiol, by interacting with the endocannabinoid system, may have an effect on:
- Chronic pain that prevents falling asleep. This is particularly the case for pain associated with arthritis, endometriosis or chronic inflammation.
- Muscle tension. As we know, when we are stressed, our muscles tense up. This unpleasant sensation can prevent peaceful sleep and restorative rest. CBD oil is a ‘muscle relaxant’. This means it relaxes the muscles, allowing them to recover more effectively!
- Stress and anxiety. There’s nothing worse than stress before bed. CBD oil promotes peaceful rest by counteracting feelings of stress. This allows you to relax fully before sleep.
Why choose CBD oil for sleep?
As we have seen, cannabidiol is beneficial for those suffering from sleep disorders. Insomnia is an invisible affliction that can really undermine your sense of well-being in daily life… but why choose cannabidiol in oil form?

Here are several reasons why CBD oil is beneficial for improving sleep:
High bioavailability
Using the so-called ‘sublingual’ method (under the tongue), cannabidiol is rapidly – and effectively – absorbed through the mucous membranes of the mouth. The body is able to absorb more cannabidiol than it would from a simple herbal tea made from flowers, for example. In other words, a few drops of CBD under the tongue and a good night’s sleep is guaranteed!
Easy to use
CBD oil bottles come with a pipette that allows you to measure out your dose perfectly and easily. CBD oil is easy to take and can be used however you like:
- Under the tongue – the quick and effective method! Simply place a few drops of oil under your tongue, leave it for around thirty seconds and swallow.
- In a herbal tea or in your meals, by pouring the oil directly into them.
- By spraying, using a suitable spray bottle.
Long-lasting effects
When you swallow your organic CBD oil, it will remain effective for the duration of digestion, i.e. for several hours. This is why, when you take CBD oil before bed, its effects will last throughout the night, promoting restorative sleep.
Precise cannabidiol concentration
Cannabidiol oils are generally made with CBD isolate, i.e. pure, 99% concentrated organic CBD crystals mixed with edible oil (coconut oil, olive oil…)
This allows you to calculate the dose of cannabidiol you are taking very precisely. For example, in a 15% CBD oil, the CBD concentration will be 7.5 mg per drop.
If your dosage is insufficient, simply increase the concentration of your oil or take more drops.
Different spectra to suit your needs
Depending on your needs, you can opt for a broad-spectrum CBD oil (with 0% THC) or a full-spectrum CBD oil (containing legal, residual traces of THC). For example, if your pain is very severe or your insomnia persists, a full-spectrum CBD oil will have a more potent effect thanks to the entourage effect, whilst a broad-spectrum oil will be perfect for daytime use.
For first-time use, opt for broad-spectrum CBD oil.
Which CBD oil promotes rest?
There are different types of cannabidiol oils. Generally speaking, regardless of the oil, users report better stress management, pain relief and improved sleep. However, certain CBD oils are more suitable than others when the aim is to sleep well or relax more effectively before bed.
Organic CBD oil
As with any cannabidiol-derived product, we strongly recommend opting for 100% organic CBD. Organic CBD oil will deliver better results because the cannabidiol molecule will not have been degraded by chemicals during the manufacturing process.
At Sixty8, all our CBD oils are organic. The hemp plants grow in a fertile environment, free from pesticides and fertilisers. The cannabidiol is extracted without the use of contaminants.
Not only is this better for your body, but it is also better for the environment.
CBD oils optimised for rest
Since it has become known that cannabidiol aids sleep, we have seen the emergence of organic CBD oils specially designed to promote sleep. This is particularly the case with certain oils that combine the benefits of cannabidiol with those of other essential oils.
For example, Trycome’s ‘Sleep’ CBD oil is made with organic cannabidiol and essential oils of chamomile and lavender. The combination of these three soothing ingredients makes it an extremely effective oil for sleeping, resting or relaxing.

Sleeping better with CBD oil: does it work?
The answer is… yes! Scientific research is still ongoing to determine the reason for such effectiveness. For the moment, the scientific community agrees that cannabidiol does indeed have an effect on sleep, particularly by counteracting feelings of stress and anxiety. The placebo effect is also suspected of being behind the improved sleep. It should be noted that, contrary to common belief, the placebo effect is not a bad thing and can help alleviate real symptoms.
Cannabidiol is now a new wellness ingredient. Organic CBD oil is likely to enhance the feeling of relaxation and, as a result, lead to better sleep. Sleeping well thanks to CBD is now possible!
