Can cannabis be grown in France?
The cultivation of cannabis in France is a subject of much debate. The information circulating on this topic is not very clear and various online sources may provide conflicting information. We therefore urge you to exercise caution.
Some sources that appear reputable suggest that only professional farmers are authorised to grow certain varieties of cannabis, listed in the official European register. Furthermore, the possession of cannabis seeds by a private individual appears to be legal, provided they have not germinated.
Generally speaking, we strongly recommend that you contact the police and gendarmerie to obtain precise answers to your questions, and this, even before purchasing your seeds, in order to ensure you comply with current legislation.
If you have further information on this subject, please feel free to share your experience or legal opinion directly in the comments section of this article!

Let’s start with some botanical basics…
To grow hemp plants, you will need to know a few essential basics of botany.
Hemp is a plant known as monoecious or dioecious. This means thatit consists of male plants and female plants. Male plants are pollinators and female plants provide cannabis seeds, also known as hemp seeds.
Cannabis is a hardy plant, known for its ability to thrive in soils that are usually inhospitable to other plants. To a certain extent, it can also remedy various soil problems. When properly cared for, hemp can grow very quickly and, in the case of agricultural production, can be harvested at the end of each growth cycle.
The different methods of growing cannabis
There are two methods of growing cannabis. Indoor cultivation and outdoor cultivation. Outdoor cultivation is generally preferred by large-scale producers for quantity, whilst indoor cultivation is favoured by private growers for quality.
At Sixty8, we offer indoor and greenhouse-grown outdoor flowers in our shop to guarantee you the best quality.
In the rest of this article, we will introduce you to these two methods to help you better understand the different aspects of each.
Indoor cannabis cultivation
Indoor cannabis cultivation allows growers to grow their hemp plants all year round, as well as to closely monitor their plants’ needs, particularly in terms of fertiliser, watering, etc.
To grow cannabis indoors, you need to follow a few basic steps which we will detail later in this article.
Step 1: get the right tools and choose your strain
To start growing, you will need:
-
a lighting kit;
-
fans;
-
carbon filters;
-
pots;
-
nutrients (fertiliser);
-
a growing medium.
Next, you will need to choose the variety best suited to your environment, from among the various seeds approved by the government.
Step 2: plant your seeds and place them under the light
Once you have all the necessary equipment and your seeds, you can start growing your plants.
Place your seeds in a pot filled with soil and cover them with one to two centimetres of potting compost. Then place them in a grow tent and use the lamps from your kit to encourage their growth.
|
Good to know: during the germination phase, cannabis plants require a dark and humid environment! |
Step 3: monitor your cannabis grow
To ensure your cannabis plants develop properly, we recommend regularly monitoring various factors, such as light, water, nutrients, growing medium, airflow and temperature. To do this, you can easily opt for a thermo-hygrometer, as well as a pH test kit.
You will be able to start harvesting as soon as your plants begin to flower.

Growing cannabis outdoors
Growing your own cannabis outdoors offers various benefits, particularly in terms of sunlight and watering your plants. If you have a large enough space, you can also grow several strains and, as a result, harvest many more buds.
Step 1: germinate your cannabis seeds
Before you start planting your cannabis, you will need to germinate your seeds, ideally indoors. To do this, as with indoor cultivation, you will need to create an environment that combines darkness and humidity.
Sow your seeds in small pots of moist soil and wait for the first shoots to appear on the surface. Once the seeds have germinated, you will need to transplant them into the ground after the Ice Saints period (during May) to avoid any risk of late frosts.
Step 2: choose where to plant your cannabis
To grow your cannabis effectively, we recommend choosing a sunny spot, facing south and sheltered from strong gusts of wind. Prepare the soil with suitable potting compost and gently transplant your seedlings into the ground.
Good to know: if you don’t have a garden, you can easily grow your cannabis in pots and place them on your balcony, for example. |
Step 3: make sure you water your plants properly
Generally speaking, hemp plants do not require much maintenance. Just make sure you water them sparingly (especially if you have chosen to grow them in pots) and do not over-fertilise, to ensure your plant develops properly.
What about greenhouses?
There is a third method for growing cannabidiol: greenhouses. A perfect blend of indoor and outdoor growing that allows you to benefit from certain advantages of both methods... But also their disadvantages.
This growing method is often reserved for professionals who have access to greenhouses, as it allows them to protect the plants from bad weather and to avoid using electricity for lighting and extraction.
We hope you find these tips on growing CBD cannabis useful. All that’s left is for you to get started!
