3 simple tips for finding the right dosage
Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced user, understanding how CBD works and knowing how to use it can be a little confusing. That’s why we’re going to answer one of the most frequently asked questions by new and experienced users:
What is the best CBD dosage?
Whilst there are numerous articles on the benefits of CBD, there are only a few on the correct CBD dosage. To make matters more confusing, unlike other supplements, the US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has not established a Recommended Daily Intake (RDI) for CBD, which means that CBD has no recommended dosage. Whilst the US is among the first countries to legalise its use, they even provide an RDI for milk.
The most important thing to remember is that every person is different and that CBD will not have the same effect. There is no specific dosage for any given individual. Important factors to consider are as follows:
- The concentration of CBD
- The weight and gender of the individual
- The chemistry and metabolism of the body
- The diet
- The severity of the condition being treated
- tolerance to CBD
Furthermore, the physiology of our body and the receptors of our endocannabinoid system undergo changes throughout life, leading to a shift in the optimal dosage of CBD for an individual. Factors such as the menstrual cycle in women can directly influence the effects of CBD due to oestrogen levels. In fact, there is no universal CBD dosage as it can vary from one day to the next… This is why certain adjustments will need to be made to find the best dosage.

So how much CBD should you take?
Sixty8’s simple tips for determining the right CBD dosage for you:
1. CBD dosage for beginners: You have to try it to find out!
How to determine your CBD dosage if you’re just starting out?
If you are taking CBD for the first time, Sixty8 advises you to start with products that have a low CBD content and increase the dose gradually. We are all built differently; we each have our own history of substance use, medication, supplements and the way we look after our bodies. That is why we all have different body chemistry, which affects the way our bodies react to CBD. That being said, it is important to first determine the initial dosage based on body weight and assess how the body reacts to this amount of CBD.
Next, gradually increase the dosage, whilst monitoring the body’s reactions until you find the dosage that suits you. It is important to understand that increasing the dosage does not necessarily enhance the effects of CBD. In fact, CBD is biphasic, meaning that from a certain low dose, it produces certain effects, which do not change if the dose is increased. And this continues until a second threshold is reached, at a significantly higher dose, where the effects change and in turn remain constant even if CBD consumption increases further.
This biphasic property of CBD may be new to some readers, but it is not that uncommon. Alcohol, for example, is biphasic. Below a certain blood alcohol level, alcohol has a stimulating effect. Above this level, alcohol acts as a depressant. This does not mean that CBD will act as a stimulant at one dosage level and as a depressant at another, but the effects may change as the dosage increases. This is why it is so important to pay attention to how you feel (both physically and mentally), and to record your personal experience.
2. Estimate the dosage based on your weight
As with most substances people with a higher body mass will need more CBD to feel the effects. To determine the appropriate CBD dosage, you generally need 1 to 6 mg of CBD per 5 kg of body weight daily.

3. Measure the dosage accurately
CBD dropper
Using a dropper is one of the simplest ways to consume CBD oil. Simply fill the graduated pipette to 1ml, place the oil under the tongue, then hold it there for 30 to 90 seconds before swallowing. Always check the packaging to find out the concentration per drop. Here is the concentration for 10ml bottles:
CBD oil dosage per drop
A simple calculation allows you to determine the number of drops required per day. Generally, people take 2 or 3 doses a day, depending on what they wish to treat.
For example: if you weigh 80 kg, wish to relieve severe discomfort and have a bottle of 20% CBD, you should start with 2 drops in the morning and 2 drops in the evening on the first day. Then gradually add one or two drops per day until you manage to treat your symptoms.
CBD capsules
CBD capsules are filled with an exact amount of product, which allows you to measure out the CBD very precisely, but removes the option of adjusting the dosage on a day-to-day basis. If the optimal CBD dosage is 22 to 29 mg, simply purchase a bottle of 25 mg capsules. The capsules should be chewed for rapid relief of discomfort, with the effect being felt within 15–20 minutes rather than 2 hours if swallowed. Furthermore, the digestion process reduces the effectiveness of CBD.
4. Side effects of CBD
There are very few side effects associated with CBD (in any form). One of the only commonly reported issues is a tendency to experience a dry mouth after consuming CBD. In a world full of treatments with a long list of negative side effects, a dry mouth is a small price to pay for reduced symptoms.
The only other side effect of CBD is a reduction in the liver’s ability to process other medications. This is extremely rare, but it is still possible. CBD can lead to poor drug metabolism. This means that if you are taking medication for blood pressure in combination with CBD, the effects of the medication may be reduced, or even completely eliminated. If you are taking other medications, consult your doctor before adding CBD to your diet.
5. Is it possible to overdose on CBD?
It is important to note that it is almost impossible to overdose on CBD if used sensibly. The only effect that CBD users may experience after taking a too high a dose is a tendency to feel drowsy. However, this tendency may not be considered a negative effect if one suffers from insomnia.
What is a high dose of CBD?
A dose of approximately 50,000 mg of CBD is considered very high. This corresponds to approximately 300 mg per kilo. There is really no reason why anyone would inadvertently consume 16 bottles of 30% CBD.
