What is Marrakech butter?

Marrakech butter, or cannabis butter, is a food product made from the hemp plant. It allows you to enjoy the benefits of CBD through various cooked dishes.

This method of consuming CBD has many advantages, particularly because it is not harmful to the throat or the respiratory system. Marrakech butter also has several notable benefits, particularly for alleviating certain digestive problems such as nausea, for example.

Making cannabis butter involves separating the cannabinoids (such as CBD) from the plant itself and infusing them into a fatty substance. It is thanks to the fat that the CBD molecules are then able to bind to the body’s receptors, allowing you to benefit from all their properties.

Our recipe for making Marrakech butter

Preparation time: between 3 hours and a full day

Ingredients (to be adjusted according to the amount of Marrakech butter to be made):

  • - approximately 250 g of unsalted butter

  • - approximately 15 g of CBD cannabis flowers

  • - approximately 2 glasses of water

  • - a metal sieve

  • - a saucepan

  • - a blender

  • - one or more Tupperware containers

  • - a wooden spoon

Step 1: grind the cannabis as finely as possible

Take your blender and chop your CBD cannabis.

The finer it is ground, the easier it will be to mix with the butter. Indeed, the quality of Marrakech butter depends above all on the ability of the hemp molecules to bind to the fats using heat. The finer the plant is chopped, the more easily it will blend into the butter and the better the quality of the final product!

Step 2: place the chopped cannabis in a saucepan

You will need to fill the saucepan with your cannabis up to a third, which is why we recommend that you choose the size of your saucepan carefully beforehand, depending on the amount of butter you wish to make.

This detail will also be important for the rest of this recipe.

Step 3: add the butter and water and bring the mixture to the boil

Caution! This step can be tricky, particularly if you are using a gas hob.

When the mixture comes to a boil, fat bubbles will form on the surface and may spill over the edge of the pan. You then run the risk of burning yourself or getting stained if the fat comes into contact with the flame.

Step 4: keep the mixture simmering at a low heat

Now leave your pan on a low heat and monitor the simmering level.

To preserve all the CBD particles contained in your cannabis, we recommend using the slow evaporation technique. Don’t forget to stir the mixture regularly and to add water when the level in your pan has dropped by half, to prevent your mixture from burning.

Step 5: stop the process when a significant amount of oil is floating on top of the water.

This may happen after 3 hours or after a whole day. When you observe this phenomenon, remove the pan from the heat and then strain the liquid into a Tupperware container.

Squeeze the harvested herb in your hand to extract the last traces of oil.

Good to know: you can certainly use the leftover herbs to season a salad, for example.

Step 6: place your Tupperware in the fridge overnight

This step is necessary to solidify the fats and thus create your Marrakech butter.

Step 7: remove the layer of butter from the Tupperware

Use a tablespoon or a spatula to skim off the layer of fat that has solidified on the surface. Be careful not to spill the water it is sitting on, or to drop your butter into it!

Step 8: enjoy your Marrakech butter!

Feel free to use it for cooking all sorts of dishes, cakes or even for making a few slices of toast!

Tip: please note that you can also add different flavours to your Marrakech butter depending on how you wish to use it. If you wish to use your cannabis butter when preparing savoury dishes, you could, for example, add garlic, thyme, basil, chilli or pepper. Conversely, you can also add oranges, lemon, sugar, coconut powder or even crushed sweets to make pastries.

How should you store your Marrakech butter?

Marrakech butter can be stored in the fridge for around two weeks. To keep it for longer, we suggest you cut it into small portions which you can then place in the freezer. This way, you can choose to use just the right amount as and when you need it.

We hope this simple recipe will help you easily prepare your Marrakech butter. Make the most of it!
